Cardiff Science Festival Programme for Tuesday 10th July
The IET presents Visit to Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory
6pm & 7pm – Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory, Cardiff
Entry FREE – SOLD OUT
On average every aircraft is hit by lightning every year. The aerospace industry adopts the worst conditions (95th percentile) of lightning for their safety and design. Carbon composites are lighter and stronger materials compared with metal. Modern aircraft structures adopt more carbon composite designs. However, further optimisation of the electrical performance of carbon composite materials is possible. Cardiff University, in collaboration with EADS, is establishing a unique lightning simulation and research facility. The Cardiff laboratory and its research efforts will help make carbon composites aircraft safer when struck by lightning. New test and modelling techniques will be developed to enhance the electrical properties of carbon composite materials and components.
Cardiff Skeptics in the Pub
7pm – The Promised Land, Windsor Place
Entry £3.00 – Tickets available on the door (no booking required)
When Rhys Morgan was 15 years old and diagnosed with the painful condition Crohn’s Disease, he logged on to a support forum – where he discovered that a “miracle” cure was being peddled, that turned out to be very dangerous. After doing some research, he discovered that forum members were being actively encouraged to drink “miracle mineral solution” which is in fact a solution of bleach, and to continue with this treatment even when they suffered resulting symptoms such as burning. Upon challenging its promoters, Rhys was banned from the forum. He has also written about the Burzynski Clinic in the US, which claims to treat cancer with “antineoplaston therapy”. This resulted in a representative issuing libel threats. Now aged 17, Rhys will talk about his various skeptical activities. Cardiff Skeptics in the Pub usually meet on the third Monday of the month at The Promised Land.
